Volunteer Rescue Unit

Description of our Volunteer Services

Volunteer Services Since 1951 the members of the Pointe-Claire Volunteer Rescue Unit have been providing the community and neighboring towns with emergency services. A team of ex-servicemen who wanted to continue serving their community in time of peace after World War II started the Rescue Unit. In the early years the unit had a few army stretchers, some blankets, and a few feet of rope, and the ability and skills to put them to good use.

Today the unit has expanded its role in the new millennium. With the advances in rescue training and equipment, the unit has become an excellent community service ready 24 hours a day and seven days a week. Each of the twenty volunteer members are trained as First Responders, Search and Rescuers, Red Cross Disaster Relief Personnel, Civil Defenders, and in many more specialized areas as described in this pamphlet.

Best of all, this is funded by the City of Pointe-Claire and the services of the unit are rendered free of charge to the community.

Search and Rescue

Search and Rescue Our members are trained as Wilderness Search and Rescuers. We are certified by the Surétè du Quebec and registered with Canada Search and Rescue. We are equipped with maps, compasses, GPS (Global Positioning Systems), survival kits, two way digital radio systems, and cellular telephones. We are also equipped with a three wheel ATV, two mountain bicycles and the necessary rescue and medical equipment to transport any injured patient out of the wilderness.

We are also trained in Urban Search and Rescue. If the need arises we can plan and execute a search of any populated area to find missing children, senior citizens and physically and mentally challenged individuals.Urban Search and Rescue. Emergency Lighting And Power

Our unit is equipped with over 12 Generators that can provide 45 kW of AC electricity. All of this generation is mobile and when installed the system is grounded for personal protection against shock.

These generators are used to power our power tools, small submersible pumps and our emergency lighting. We can provide up to 35 kW of illumination at any location. This is enough lighting to clearly light up a football field.

Ice Rescue and High Level Rescue

Ice Rescue and High Level RescueOur Unit can provide a team of trained rescuers to perform Ice Rescues and High Level Rescues.

For Ice and Cold Water Rescue, we are equipped with the two cold water rescue suits, life jackets, throw lines, ice picks, life lines and the knowledge to safely rescue individuals that have fallen through or have become trapped on a frozen body of water.

We also specialize in High Level Rescue. We are equipped with over 1000ft + of lifeline, 8 high level harnesses, 4 repelling harnesses three Ferno Washington Baskets and zip line capability. We can safely transport down an individual that has become injured on a building or on mountainside.
Notre véhicule de transport (28-4) et notre véhicule de commande (28-3) peuvent fournir en tout temps une assistance immédiate.

Emergency Shelters and Red Cross

Red CrossIn the unfortunate event that people get forced out of their homes due to fires or a natural disaster, our unit can setup a short-term shelter.

We have arrangements with the Canadian Red Cross to provide food, clothing and shelter for anybody who might be forced out of their homes for short periods of time. This is so that the displaced citizens can have a warm place to sleep and have food to eat until they make other arrangements.

We also have the capability to convert a building into a short-term shelter. We can provide lighting, heat, blankets, toiletries and even food to anybody who requires it.

Our 12-passenger transport vehicle (28-4) and our command vehicle (28-3) are equipped with all the necessary equipment to give immediate assistance.

Civil Defense

Civil DefensePointe Claire Rescue is equipped to handle almost any disaster. We have the training and resources to provide assistance in the event of a natural or man made disasters.

Our two heavy rescue vehicles (28-1 & 28-2) are equipped to handle flooding, building collapse, tree work, and building board up.

During the 1998 Ice Storm, PCVRU spent many days clearing roads of debris, cutting down trees, and providing electricity to emergency shelters.

We are also trained on how to evacuate large populations of citizens from an area in case of an emergency evacuation involving hazardous material spills or fires.

First Aid Stations

First Aid StationsEach of our members are trained as First Responders. They possess the necessary skills to assess, stabilize, treat and prepare for transport any injured individual.

Upon request we participate in many large-scale events such as Canada Day, Fete National, sporting events or community events. We will provide the necessary personnel and medical equipment to attend to any medical incident that might arise.

We are equipped with 1 Automatic External Defibrillator, 5 Medical Trauma Kits, 4 Oxygen tanks, 4 Spinal backboards, two medical mountain bikes and much more medical supplies to provide your event with the level of safety and security that you require.

Please note that we require at least 4 weeks notice to process your request. Requests come on first come, first served basis and depend on the number of volunteer members that we have available. Priority will go to events in the City of Pointe Claire.
