The Valois private chapel, late 19th century. |
During the Spanish influenza epidemic of 1918, Edmond Morin vowed to build a chapel on his property if none of his eleven children contracted the disease, which would eventually kill 50,000 Canadians. The Morin's imposing home has since been replaced by the Bayview Hospital. The chapel, preserved by the founders of the institution, moved three times following construction of a new wing in 1962.
The present-day owner, Mr. Samatas, added an old bell in the pinnacle, which he acquired from a railway line.
Another chapel in Valois, known as Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes-Santé-des-Malades, or the Valois Chapel, was also the result of a vow made during a plea for recovery. It was built in 1875 by the widow of Dr François-Michel Valois and her son, L. J. A. Valois, rebuilt and enlarged in 1893, and finally demolished in 1948.
