Public Access Defibrillation
Over the past few years, the City of Pointe-Claire has realised the importance of defibrillation and the potential impact it can have for our community.

Through the Oliver and Estelle Nicholson Foundation and City funding, we have purchased defibrillator units. They are primarily placed in highly frequented areas.

The specific locations are:

Malcolm-Knox Aquatic Center (2)
Bob-Birnie Arena
Canoe Club
Stewart Hall
Public Library
Noël-Legault Centre
Pointe-Claire Rescue Unit (4)
Public Security (5)
Valois Library
Recreation
City Hall
Arthur-Séguin chalet
Public Works (2)
Water Treatment Plant
Terra-Cotta chalet

All outdoor swimming pools:

  • Valois
  • Lakeside
  • Lakeshore
  • Cedar Park
  • Viking
  • PCVP
  • Sunnyside

It is our goal to have defibrillators in all of our municipal buildings and to have many employees trained. To date we have trained over 250 employees in the buildings where the defibrillators are placed as well as our Day camp, Parks program and outdoor pool employees.

In a recent North American study, 259 patients had an automated external defibrillator (AED) applied by a bystander; the survival rate was good. Of patients who had a bystander perform only CPR, just 9% of them survived long enough to be treated and later discharged from hospital. When bystanders provided CPR and used a defibrillator to deliver a shock, survival increased to 36% - approximately four times that of CPR alone.

Because of our city's awareness, we are now one the leading cities in the province when it comes to Public Access Defibrillation.

Do your part, take a class and save a life!
