Residential extension
How to obtain your building permit for a residential extension (including building a deck)

Work considered as an extension :

  • An increase in floor space area
  • An increase in volume
  • A change in the slope of the roof
  • Work involving the enclosure of a veranda, a deck, a porch, etc.


CHECKLIST
To submit a request for a building permit, you will need to show:  

  1. Location of all renovations on a certificate of location
  2. Location of existing decks, pools, ancillary buildings and other structures
  3. Distances from property lines, sheds, pool, etc.
  4. Construction details and plans – a technologist or an architects stamp and signature may be required
  5. Indicate all dimensions, heights, facing materials, etc.
  6. Demolition details if any
  7. Elevation of all sides of new construction or renovation
  8. Cut of the walls
  9. Description of the foundation, structural information for floors and roofs
  10. Letter of authorization from the owner of the property (if necessary)
  11. A damage deposit may be required (500$)
  12. Possible service fees required by engineering dept.

Your extension project may be subject to the Site Planning and Architectural Integration By-Law (SPAIP By-Law) PC-2787Please verify. All residential projects that are subject to a Site Planning and Architectural Integration review should be submitted as per the procedure described here.
